Obtain the Right Product
• Use a 4% Chlorhexidine Gluconate (CHG) solution or wash, often found as “Hibiclens” or a generic equivalent.
• If you have a known allergy or sensitivity to CHG, notify your surgical team immediately for an alternative cleansing solution.
Timing
• Night Before Surgery: Shower or bathe with the CHG product.
• Morning of Surgery (if instructed): Repeat the same steps before leaving for the hospital/clinic.
• Do not exceed more than two CHG showers/baths within a 24-hour period unless specifically directed by your healthcare provider.
Preparation
• Remove all jewelry before showering.
• If you need to wash your hair, use your regular shampoo first. Rinse thoroughly, then apply the CHG solution as described below.
• Do not shave the surgical area unless explicitly directed by your surgeon.
CHG Shower or Bath Steps
• Wet Skin: Turn on the shower or water and thoroughly wet your entire body.
• Apply CHG: Turn off the water (to prevent diluting the solution). Pour a small amount (about 1–2 tablespoons) of CHG into your hand or onto a clean washcloth.
Wash Your Body:
• Start from the neck down.
• Pay special attention to the areas where the surgery will occur, as well as underarms, groin, and skin folds.
• Avoid contact with your face, eyes, ears, mouth, and genital area to reduce irritation.
• Contact Time: Gently rub the solution on your skin for at least 2 minutes. This contact time helps the CHG effectively reduce bacteria.
• Rinse: Turn the water on again and thoroughly rinse your entire body to remove all soap residue.
• Repeat: If directed, repeat the CHG application and rinsing steps once more.
Drying Off
• Pat yourself dry with a clean, fresh towel.
• Put on clean clothing or pajamas. Do not wear clothes you have used previously.
Drying Off
• Do Not Apply lotions, creams, powders, deodorants, perfumes, or aftershave to your surgical site or anywhere on your body after using CHG. These products can reduce the effectiveness of CHG.
• Sleep on clean bed linens if possible.

• If your surgeon or preoperative nurse provided specific instructions (for example, which areas to concentrate on or how many times to bathe), follow their directives exactly.

• On the day of surgery, be prepared to confirm or document how many times you performed the CHG bath and whether there were any issues (e.g., skin reactions).
